# What is a power flush — and does my system need one?

A power flush pumps cleaning chemicals through your radiators and pipework to shift the black sludge (corroded metal) and scale that build up over years. Signs you may need one include radiators cold at the bottom, cold spots, a noisy boiler or slow-to-warm rooms. Approved Document L says heating circuits should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed before a new heating appliance is installed. If your system is clean and protected, you don't need one, and we'll say so.

## The signs you actually need one

Baxi lists radiators hot at the top but cold at the bottom, a noisy system that gurgles and kettles, radiators needing frequent bleeding, and radiators that don't reach temperature as signs of sludge. Viessmann adds that cold at the bottom is the sludge symptom, while air gathers at high points and bleeding clears it. Dirty water when you bleed a radiator is another tell.

## Flush, or just a filter?

Not every system needs a full power flush — sometimes a chemical clean and a good magnetic filter fitted on the return does the job and keeps it clean. EnergyPages puts a filter at £100–£200 fitted, against £300–£600 for a power flush.

Baxi advises fitting a magnetic filter and cleaning it at each annual service. We'll tell you honestly which your system needs; recommending the bigger job when the smaller one would do isn't how we work.

## Why it matters at install

Approved Document L says that before a new heating appliance is installed the central heating and primary hot water circuits should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed, an inhibitor added, and the system commissioned to BS 7593. Baxi also says repairs caused by sludge are not covered by its warranties.

A proper flush (or clean) plus a filter at install isn't an upsell; it's what keeps the boiler, and its guarantee, healthy.

> Cold at the bottom of a radiator is sludge; cold at the top is air. One needs a flush, the other a key — and you should not pay for the wrong one.

## Related questions

### How long does a power flush take?

Vaillant says around 8 hours to complete, and longer for larger or more complex systems. We price it fixed at survey based on the number of radiators and the state of the water.

### Will a power flush fix cold radiators?

If they're cold at the bottom from sludge, a flush is the fix Viessmann gives for it. Cold at the top is trapped air, which bleeding fixes instead; we check which you've got before recommending anything.

### Do I need a power flush with every new boiler?

Not always a full power flush, but Approved Document L says the system should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed before a new heating appliance is installed. Whether that means a power flush or a chemical clean plus a filter depends on your system, and we'll tell you which.
