# How much does home air conditioning cost in the UK?

A single-room air-to-air system (one indoor wall unit, one outdoor unit) typically costs £1,800–£2,600 installed in the UK — 2026 market guides put the spread at roughly £1,500–£3,000 (BestBuilders; WarmZilla gives £1,000–£2,500 for installation) depending on unit and job, with Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric single rooms listed at £1,800–£3,200. Multi-room systems start around £3,400 and scale with each room (BestBuilders: £2,800–£4,500 for two rooms, £3,500–£7,000 for three to four). Because these systems are air-to-air heat pumps, they heat in winter as well as cool in summer — which is the half of the value most people miss when comparing quotes.

## What drives the price

Unit quality and capacity come first: brand choice alone moves a single-room price by £400–£800. Next is the pipe run between the indoor and outdoor units, where BestBuilders says runs over about 5 m add roughly £150–£400. Mounting complexity, electrics and access, such as scaffolding for high walls, do the rest.

Premium brands buy quieter running, better efficiency and parts availability years from now. A straightforward back-to-back install, with the indoor unit on an external wall and the outdoor unit directly behind, sits at the lower end.

## Running costs

Cooling a single room costs roughly 15–20p per hour at rated power at Ofgem's 26.32p per kWh price cap (datasheet cooling input 0.6–0.76 kW for the Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin units in our range). Heating via air-to-air is far cheaper to run than an electric radiator: heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, so you get several kilowatts of heat per kilowatt of electricity. BestBuilders suggests budgeting £70–£150 a year for a service, and Daikin's manual recommends maintenance at least once a year.

On the manufacturer datasheets for the Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric units in our range, rated seasonal heating efficiency (SCOP) is 4.7 to 5.2 and the quietest indoor sound level is 18–19 dB(A) — standard rating conditions, not a guarantee for your room.

## How cheap quotes cut corners

The classic cuts: an undersized unit (it looks cheaper, then runs flat-out and never quite cools the room), no pressure test or vacuum before charging, skipped commissioning paperwork (your warranty claim gets refused), and — worst — uncertified refrigerant work, which is illegal.

A quote well under market is telling you which of these it's missing. Skipping the vacuum and pressure test means the system can leak slowly from day one.

## Who's allowed to install it

GOV.UK says you must have F-gas qualifications to install, service and maintain air-conditioning systems, and that working with F gas without them is against the law — so always ask to see the certificate before work starts. The same rule applies if you buy the unit yourself: the refrigerant connection still needs a qualified engineer.

## A word on 'grants for air con'

You may see adverts promising £2,500 off air conditioning. The truth: a government grant exists for air-to-air heat pumps only when they replace an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system, installed under MCS certification — it never applies to cooling-only air conditioning, and Ofgem says installers must be MCS certified. Anyone promising it on a cooling install is mis-selling. We'll tell you plainly at the survey what's real for your home.

> People price air conditioning against a fan. The unit that cools your July also heats your January at heat-pump efficiency — that is the half of the value the comparison misses.

## Related questions

### Does home air conditioning add value?

It can — bedrooms that stay cool are a genuine selling point, and it's also a heating upgrade, which is part of its appeal. We can't promise a figure on resale value.

### What does servicing cost?

BestBuilders suggests budgeting £70–£150 a year for a service at 2026 prices. Daikin's manual recommends maintenance at least once a year and says dirty filters give poor heating and cooling.

### Can I get a grant for air conditioning?

Not for cooling-only air conditioning — no scheme covers it, and anyone advertising otherwise is mis-selling. Heat-pump grants exist for qualifying whole-home heating installations through MCS-certified installers; we explain what's real, honestly, before you commit to anything.

### How long does installation take?

A straightforward single-room install is typically done in a day, including pressure testing and handover. Multi-room systems take longer depending on pipe runs.

### Is it cheaper to buy the unit myself and pay someone to fit it?

Rarely — supply-and-fit includes matched, warrantied kit, and an installer often can't warranty equipment they didn't supply. The refrigerant connection needs an F-gas qualified engineer either way.

### My conservatory is too hot to use in July — will air conditioning fix it?

Yes, if it's sized for the glass. A conservatory is mostly glazing, so solar gain is high and an undersized unit will lose the fight on the hottest afternoons — the exact days you want it. We size to the glazed area and which way the room faces, not the floor area, so it actually holds temperature when it matters.
